Character Name: Ethan

Character Series: Last Scenario

Age: 28

Background: Ethan was born in the village of Cromwell in the Rosehart Kingdom. He was the younger of two brothers, his brother Castor being two years older. The two of them grew up together in the village's relatively small community and were always very close. Particularly of notice was the way Ethan, despite being the younger brother, was always looking out for and protecting Castor. The two brothers promised each other to become knights when they were older and protect the village together.

However, when Ethan was thirteen, Pargon Island attempted (successfully) to separate from the Kingdom, and the Empire nearby took this as an opportunity to attack. The residents of Cromwell were fortunate for a while that their village was not affected by the war, and many of those who could took the chance to leave for safer locations, preferably on a different continent. Ethan and Castor's family did not have the means to relocate, however, and so they were among the remaining people in Cromwell when it was attacked.

The attack on Cromwell had not been planned; it was the work of a single soldier with his own agenda. Every single person in the village, save for Ethan and Castor, was killed. The two teenagers scavenged a few weapons and hid in the rubble for a day and a half, taking turns keeping watch. Then, three young Empire recruits came to check on Cromwell, and were astonished by the state they found the village in. Ethan and Castor did their best to stay hidden, but one of the soldiers spotted something, and, panicked, the fourteen-year-old Ethan stabbed him when he went over to investigate.

Right then, soldiers from the Kingdom showed up and chased the three Empire recruits, one of them now fatally wounded, out of the village. The soldier in charge, Zawu, took Ethan and Castor back to a safer city where they told her what had happened. For a while, the two brothers stayed with a hospitable family in the capital city of Condor. Soon afterwards, Zawu left the military and started a home for war orphans, which is where Ethan and Castor spent the remainder of their childhood. Remembering their dream from years ago, the two brothers trained their fighting skills together, planning to become part of the Kingdom's military when they were old enough. Castor in particular was desperate to become more powerful, having been hit incredibly hard by the massacre of his parents and community.

As planned, Castor joined the army when he turned eighteen, and Ethan two years later. Both of them, but Castor especially, were naturally talented and rose through the ranks fairly quickly, with Zawu's support. When Ethan was twenty-four and Castor twenty-six, Zawu convinced the military to make Castor a General. Ethan, along with two others, one of whom had grown up in the same orphanage as them, became part of an elite team that worked directly for Castor: the Omega Team.

It was also around this time that the presence of a race called the Havali became known to Castor. They were a race that had been around far longer than humans, and which humans had evolved from, but had been forced into hiding underground after a war with the humans hundreds of years ago. With Zawu's help, Castor formed an alliance with their leader, Ortas, who planned to use the granddaughter of the Havali Elder to awaken all the Havali who had been sleeping since the war and fight for control of the surface.

The entrance to the Havali's home, Entalar, was kept hidden by three seals located in various places around the world. It became a task for the Omega Team to check regularly on the seals to make sure they were intact, although they were not told what the seals were for. Over time, Ethan grew suspicious, wondering what was so important that his own brother couldn't trust him with the information, and voiced these concerns to the Omega Team's number three as they checked on one of the seals, explaining his plan to investigate on his own. All might have gone well if he hadn't been overheard.

The eavesdropper was a low-ranked Kingdom soldier named Helio, who later confronted Ethan about the matter, warning him of the consequences of disloyalty to the Kingdom; Ethan argued that he had a right to know just what he was working towards, and that he was watching out for Castor. Soon enough, Helio told Castor about his brother's investigations. Castor had Ethan dealt with quietly, sending him to a facility where research was going into the effects a magical substance called Biorite had on living organisms. Ethan was imprisoned alone in a cell full of Biorite. The story given to everyone else, including Zawu, was that he was dead. Flynn, the Omega Team's previous Number Two, became the new Number One, and Helio took the Number Two spot.

It was three years before Ethan escaped. During that time, he was affected physically and mentally by the Biorite. He lost all of his memories for a time, and only after he'd been out for a while did he remember anything at all... and then, all he could remember was everything he'd tried hardest not to forget: most importantly, what he had learned about the Kingdom's plans.

Ethan was broken out of the facility by a mysterious old man known only as Phantom, who had also been imprisoned in Biorite, for much longer than Ethan had been. He escaped, although Phantom was caught, and went after a certain person: a young man named Hilbert whom Zawu and the Kingdom planned to use as a puppet by having Zawu approach him as a prophetess who saw the future and tell him he was descended from an ancient hero. Ethan eventually tracked down the group Hilbert was traveling with and confronted them just when Zawu was speaking to them. He told them that Zawu was a liar and not a prophetess at all, and Zawu, once she got over the shock of Ethan being alive, fled. Ethan explained to the party what had happened to his memories, and agreed to travel with them, mainly to keep an eye on Hilbert.

The group, formerly part of the Republic's military, left for the Empire where a civil war was taking place after the assassination of the Emperor. The war was between the Emperor's daughter, the new and rather incompetent Empress, and a group of rebels supporting his son, Prince Wilhelm. Hilbert and the others joined with the rebel forces.

Part way through the civil war, the Republic decided to take advantage of the Empire's current weakness and attack, but the rebel forces managed to fight them off. Meanwhile, in the Empire's capital, there was political discord. The current Prime Minister, who had been the one behind the Emperor's assassination, poisoned the Empress in secret and became the new Emperor; however, his reign was short-lived, as just before the rebel forces took control of the capital, his friend the 'hero' of the Empire, who had watched him poison the Empress, killed him. Afterwards, he went on to singlehandedly fight off the Republic forces attacking the capital; although he won, he sacrificed his life in the process.

With the capital under the control of the new Emperor, the group decided to go back and investigate something they had seen before: the Ether Well. The granddaughter of the Havali Elder, Lorenza, was part of their group, and believed she had the power to awaken the sleeping demons (actually, the Havali, but they didn't realize that), and they agreed that it was worth investigating. Traveling to the depths of the ruin, they discovered not a demon, but a Havali woman, sealed in Biorite. Lorenza, using her powers, woke the woman, Tiamat, up, and it was revealed that she had gone insane during her time imprisoned and sworn revenge on Lorenza's grandfather, Barasur. Thanks to her weakened state, the group managed to defeat her, and she ran off.

When they returned to the boat, Ethan asked to speak to Hilbert privately, and explained to him that he was not actually a descendant of the hero Alexander, but only a puppet for the Kingdom and the Havali. Hilbert told the rest of the group, and Ethan told them everything he remembered that he hadn't told them yet. Hilbert was devastated to learn how easily he had been fooled, but he quickly regained his determination when he heard that his hometown was being attacked. The group headed off to Whitelake and drove the Kingdom forces out of the town, where they met Castor.

Returning to the Empire and wondering what to do next, Ethan reminded the party about the facility where he had been imprisoned. They traveled to the Kingdom where it was located and, with unexpected assistance from Zawu, entered and destroyed the place. Their next goal, they decided, was to investigate the Havali -- Ethan knew the locations of the three seals that kept Entalar hidden, and so they headed from seal to seal, destroying them all.

At the entrance to Entalar, they were confronted by Zawu, who said she was no longer sure what to do. She fought them and lost, and then the area collapsed and the party members were scattered in different tunnels. Ethan ended up with Randolph, a scientist whose son had been lost in the war between the Empire and Kingdom years ago, and they tried to find their way to Entalar. Eventually, all of the groups met up again -- to their surprise, Hilbert and Zawu had banded together and fought as a team, and discovered something shocking: Phantom, the mysterious old man who had broken Ethan out of the Biorite Facility, was actually the ancient hero Alexander.

He told the story of the ancient war: it had been a war against the Havali. Alexander and his three companions had been the heroes of the war; however, at the last moment, Alexander had realized how wrong what he was doing was and joined with the Havali in an attempt to atone for his crimes. When the Havali went into hiding, sealing themselves in Biorite so they could sleep for hundreds of years, Alexander did the same; however, the Biorite did not affect humans the same way as the Havali, and he lost most of his memory for a time as well as aging physically.

The party then moved to stop the Awakening, which Ortas planned to use Lorenza for. They arrived almost in time; however, before they could do anything to stop it, Castor showed up and, quite literally, stabbed Ortas in the back. Near death, Ortas fled to his throne to recover, where the party finished him off. Castor, meanwhile, encountered Tiamat in the tunnels and made a deal to work together with her.

Returning to Herzog, the party learned that while the Republic had been attacking the Empire, the Kingdom had seized control of the Republic. They agreed to help the rebel forces in the Republic and went there to join up with them. There, they fought Castor and won. Castor had a bit of breakdown in response to losing, and asked Ethan if he'd really forgotten him. That was when most of what Ethan had forgotten about his childhood came back to him, and in addition to remembering Castor was his brother, he realized that he was the one who had killed Randolph's son. Castor was rescued and taken back to the Kingdom by the Omega Team, and the party headed for Serinal Port in the Kingdom in pursuit of them, following them into the Serinal Woods. As they caught up with the foursome, Helio told the others to go ahead without him and ingested concentrated Biorite to enable him to fight the party. The party killed him, but the remainder of the Omega Team and Castor had gotten away.

When Castor awoke back at the Kingdom's capital, he was incredibly shaken by his defeat, and his first instinct was to stay hidden for the rest of his life. However, then he remembered Tiamat, and decided he would use her to become more powerful.

The party, meanwhile, went to Entalar to talk to Barasur, who explained what had happened to Tiamat: once, they had been in love, but then she had discovered an ancient power that took her over. Unable to kill her, Barasur had sealed her in Biorite; however, she had not slept but instead been conscious for hundreds of years, driving her insane. He told them where Castor and Tiamat were likely to have gone, and the party went after them.

They didn't catch up to the two in time to stop them from gaining control of a powerful weapon: an ancient airship invented by Havali hundreds of years ago. Using the airship, the most powerful weapon in the world, Castor broke off ties with the Kingdom and set off to control the world himself.

The party organized an attack on the airship eventually, and landed only to find that Castor had abandoned Tiamat and set off himself after the ancient power that Tiamat was searching for: the power of the Biorite Cluster. They defeated Tiamat once and for all, and were narrowly saved from being taken with her by a longtime Kingdom friend of Ethan's, Alison, sacrificing herself. Now in control of the airship, they launched an attack on Condor, the Kingdom's capital, and took control of it.

With that done, they were ready to enter the Biorite Cluster and go after Castor, with the support of the Republic, the Empire, and the Kingdom soldiers who had been loyal to Castor. Venturing into the depths of the structure, they eventually found Castor, who revealed his plan: to use the power of the Biorite Cluster to control the minds of everyone in the world, thus preventing any further conflict. They fought and defeated him, and he fell into the depths of the Cluster.

The place began to collapse before they could search for Castor, and everyone fled, save for Hilbert, who was always the heroic type. At great risk to himself, Hilbert rescued Castor, and led him out just before it collapsed.

Greatly relieved, the party members went their separate ways, reuniting with their loved ones. For the time being, at least, there was peace all across the world, although the problem of when the Awakening would take place was still present.

Personality: Ethan is a man of few words. He's not at all social, and is never entirely sure how to handle himself around people. When he does speak, it's always because he has something to say. He almost always seems serious, and never particularly happy. Despite the stone-faced impression he gives, Ethan has definite emotions and opinions, and is in fact quite a thoughtful person, although he isn't always inclined to share them -- particularly after the time when he was imprisoned, he has been generally closed off from others and only says what's necessary. While he was a fairly to-the-point and unsocial person even before being imprisoned, these traits are much more noticeable now. As has been touched on, he has a bit of trouble coping with emotions, and with opening up to and trusting others.

Having been a high-ranked member of the Kingdom army for a good portion of his life, Ethan is skilled at fighting and relatively good at strategizing. He has a tendency to seem slightly irritable a good deal of the time, and more than a little hostile around those he holds grudges against... and holding grudges is something he has a bit more than usual of a tendency to do. He is also a fairly determined person, and does not give up on anything easily, although he is always very realistic.

Item Lost: The memory of talking with Castor about their futures.
